Planning Notes
Just Engaged? Here’s Exactly What to Do Next
By Harriet | Dorset Wedding Co.

Congratulations! You’re engaged. 💍
Before you start a Pinterest board, book twelve venue tours and panic about whether you’re already behind schedule… take a breath.
You’ve got time.
One of the first things couples often say to me is, “We have absolutely no idea where to start.” And honestly? That’s completely normal. Planning a wedding can feel overwhelming because there are so many decisions, so many suppliers and an endless stream of advice telling you what you should be doing.
But your wedding doesn’t need to start with a spreadsheet.
It starts with the two of you deciding what you actually want your wedding day to feel like.
As a Dorset wedding planner, I help couples turn that initial “Where on earth do we begin?” into a clear, exciting plan. So if you’ve recently got engaged, here’s where I recommend starting.
1. Take a moment to actually be engaged
This might sound obvious, but it’s easy to jump straight into wedding planning.
Before you start looking at venues, budgets and guest lists, enjoy this bit.
Tell your favourite people. Open the champagne. Take some time to celebrate. Have conversations about what you’re both excited about rather than immediately discussing table plans and chair covers.
There is no prize for being the couple who books their venue 48 hours after getting engaged.
Your wedding planning journey should be enjoyable too.
2. Talk about the kind of wedding you actually want
Before you choose a venue or set a date, talk about the bigger picture.
Ask yourselves:
What do we want our wedding to feel like?
Relaxed? Intimate? Wild? Romantic? Fun? Food-focused? Party-focused? Elegant? Completely unconventional?
And perhaps more importantly:
What don’t we want?
Maybe you don’t want a traditional three-course wedding breakfast.
Maybe you don’t want a formal sit-down reception.
Maybe you don’t want to spend the day being moved from one photograph to another.
Maybe you want incredible food, brilliant music and a dance floor that stays busy all night.
There are no wrong answers.
Your wedding doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. In fact, some of the most memorable weddings are the ones where couples stop worrying about what a wedding is supposed to look like and start thinking about what feels like them.
3. Start with your guest list
You don’t need a perfectly finalised guest list at this stage, but you do need a realistic idea of numbers.
Are you imagining 30 people, 80 people or 150?
This decision will influence almost everything else — from the type of venue you can consider to your catering costs and the overall atmosphere of the day.
If you’re struggling with the guest list, start with your non-negotiables.
Who absolutely needs to be there?
Then work outwards.
And remember: you don’t have to invite someone simply because you went to their wedding, they invited you to theirs, or because someone else thinks they should be there.
This is your wedding.
4. Have an honest conversation about your budget
This is probably the least exciting conversation you’ll have during wedding planning, but it is one of the most important.
You don’t need to know exactly what everything will cost yet. You simply need to establish what you’re comfortable spending.
Think about:
How much you have available now
Whether family or other people are contributing
Whether you’ll be adding to your wedding fund each month
What you’re realistically comfortable spending
Which elements are most important to you
I’d also recommend keeping a contingency fund.
There will almost always be something you hadn’t considered — additional stationery, transport, extra accommodation, a last-minute supplier requirement or simply something you fall completely in love with.
Your budget should give you freedom, not leave you feeling anxious.
5. Decide how flexible you are with your wedding date
You don’t necessarily need to choose an exact date straight away.
Instead, think about how flexible you can be.
Are you set on a Saturday in August?
Would you consider a Friday?
Could you get married in spring or autumn?
Would a weekday wedding work for you?
Being flexible with your date can open up more venue options and sometimes make a significant difference to your overall budget.
And if you’re dreaming of a particular Dorset wedding venue, being flexible can be especially helpful if your preferred dates are already popular.
6. Start researching Dorset wedding venues
Now comes the fun part.
Dorset has an incredible variety of wedding venues, from beautiful countryside estates and barns to coastal locations and more relaxed, unconventional spaces.
But don’t choose a venue simply because it looks beautiful in photographs.
Think about how you want your wedding day to work.
Ask questions such as:
How many guests can the venue accommodate?
Can you have your ceremony and reception in the same place?
What’s included in the venue hire?
Can you choose your own suppliers?
Are there catering restrictions?
What time can your suppliers access the venue?
When does the music have to finish?
Is there a wet-weather plan?
Is accommodation available?
Are there additional charges you need to know about?
A venue can look perfect on Instagram and still not be the right venue for your wedding.
Think beyond the room itself.
Think about the experience.
7. Decide which suppliers you need to book early
Not every wedding supplier needs to be booked immediately.
Some popular suppliers, however, can get booked up well in advance — particularly for peak-season Saturdays.
Depending on your plans, you may want to prioritise:
Venue
Wedding planner or coordinator
Photographer
Videographer
Caterer
Band or DJ
Florist
The exact order will depend on your wedding and your priorities.
If there is a particular supplier whose work you absolutely love, don’t assume they’ll still be available once you’ve sorted everything else.
If they’re important to you, check their availability early.
8. Think about what matters most to you
This is one of my favourite parts of wedding planning.
If you could only choose three things that you want your guests to remember, what would they be?
Perhaps it’s incredible food.
Perhaps it’s the party.
Perhaps it’s the flowers.
Perhaps it’s having everyone you love together in one place.
Perhaps it’s photographs that capture the day exactly as it felt.
Perhaps it’s creating an experience your guests have never had before.
Your priorities don’t have to match anyone else’s.
Once you know what really matters to you, it becomes much easier to decide where to invest your budget — and where you can happily save.
9. Don’t feel like you have to follow every wedding tradition
There is absolutely nothing wrong with a traditional wedding.
But there is also nothing wrong with doing things differently.
You don’t have to have bridesmaids.
You don’t have to cut the cake.
You don’t have to have a receiving line.
You don’t have to sit down for a formal wedding breakfast.
You don’t even have to get married on a Saturday.
Your wedding should reflect your relationship, your personalities and the things you enjoy.
If something doesn’t feel like you, ask yourself why you’re doing it.
Sometimes the best wedding decisions are the ones you make simply because you want to.
10. Consider whether you actually need a wedding planner
You might be thinking:
“Do we really need a wedding planner?”
And the honest answer is: not every couple does.
Some couples genuinely enjoy organising everything themselves.
Others love the idea of planning but quickly discover that there are hundreds of decisions, emails, timelines and logistics happening behind the scenes.
That’s where a wedding planner can make a huge difference.
A planner isn’t just there to choose flowers or make things look pretty.
A good planner helps you make decisions, manage your budget, recommend trusted suppliers, keep everything moving and make sure the plans you’ve spent months creating actually work on the day.
And perhaps most importantly, they give you someone to turn to when you have absolutely no idea what to do next.
At Dorset Wedding Co., my approach is personal and completely tailored to you. Whether you need someone to guide you through the entire planning process or simply take over the logistics on the wedding day itself, the aim is always the same:
Your wedding should feel like you — and you should actually enjoy being there.
11. Don’t try to do everything at once
This is probably the biggest piece of advice I can give newly engaged couples.
You don’t need to plan your entire wedding this weekend.
Start with the big decisions.
Guest numbers.
Budget.
Date.
Venue.
Then work from there.
Once those foundations are in place, everything else becomes much easier.
And if you’re feeling overwhelmed, stop.
You are allowed to take a week off from wedding planning.
Your wedding isn’t going anywhere.
Your wedding doesn’t have to be perfect
There is an enormous amount of pressure surrounding weddings.
Perfect photographs.
Perfect flowers.
Perfect tables.
Perfect weather.
Perfect outfits.
Perfect everything.
But after working with couples and seeing countless wedding days unfold, I can tell you something much more important:
The best weddings aren’t necessarily the most perfect ones. They’re the ones that feel the most like the couple.
The ones where everyone is laughing.
Where the drinks are flowing.
Where the dance floor is packed.
Where something unexpected happens and everyone rolls with it.
Where you look around and think, “This is exactly how I wanted today to feel.”
That’s what you should be planning for.
Not perfection.
Your perfect version of a wedding.
